Exploring Arizona: A Photographer’s Travel Diary

Spring break in Arizona was an adventure like no other. While I may have missed out on covering a major news event back home in Ada, the experience of exploring the stunning landscapes of the Southwest was truly unforgettable.

From the towering saguaros of Saguaro National Park to the ancient ruins of Montezuma Castle National Monument, every stop on my itinerary was a feast for the eyes. And of course, my trusty camera was by my side every step of the way.

As a photographer, I know the importance of traveling light. While my newspaper assignments often require heavy, high-performance gear, my travel photography kit is all about simplicity and ease of use. This trip, I opted for a combination of the Nikon D7100 and the Nikon D5500, along with a selection of versatile lenses that allowed me to capture the beauty of the desert landscapes with ease.

One of my favorite combinations for long hikes was the D5500 paired with the 18-135mm lens. Lightweight and compact, this setup allowed me to explore remote trails and capture stunning vistas without feeling weighed down.

Some may question my decision not to pack a super-telephoto lens for wildlife photography, but for me, the focus was on capturing the grandeur of the landscapes, not the creatures that inhabit them. And traveling light meant I could venture further into the backcountry, immersing myself in the beauty of the natural world.

Overall, my trip to Arizona was a resounding success. From the towering rock formations of Chiricahua National Monument to the futuristic architecture of Biosphere 2, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery. And while I may have missed out on a big news event back home, the memories I made in the desert will stay with me for a lifetime.
